Best for… a good old emotional cry
Getting the New Year off to a great start is a brand new Netflix original, Spinning Out. Starring Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile actress Kaya Scodelario and Mad Men’s January Jones, the show follows the emotional ups and downs of a former competitive skater whose injury means she must choose between teaming up with a skating partner and competing as a pair, or walking away from the ice altogether.

Best for…really getting stuck in
Everything’s going well at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. That is, until the Sheriff dies, and an old archaic Wild West law sees the title shift to the very unlikely Bill Hollister; a man that not only doesn’t want the job, but doesn’t seem to have what it takes to do it. Starring Stephen Dorff as Hollister and Cougar Town’s Bobby Cobb (Brain Van Holt) as his only confidante, Hollister’s on a mission to prove he can do the job.

Best for… classic jumps and gruesome scares
Based on the Bram Stoker novel, this three-part horror series is coming to us from across the pond as a joint venture from Netflix and the BBC. The three episodes, titled The Rules of the Beast, Blood Vessel, and The Dark Compass, look into some never before told adventures during the vampire’s journey throughout Eastern Europe. Not for the fainthearted, this TV show looks set to tell the tale from the most gruesome perspective.

Best for… tapping your toes
Set in San Francisco’s bustling software hub, coding whiz Zoey Clarke suddenly develops an unusual power; she can hear what people are thinking… through music. Never really one for playlists, Zoey, played by Suburgatory’s Jane Levy, begins to use her power to her advantage… but will it soon become a curse? This musical comedy features the vocal stylings of Pitch Perfect’s Skylar Astin, who’s no stranger to song.

Best for…chills and thrills
For lovers of The Shining, The Mist, and The Green Mile comes yet another Stephen King adaptation: The Outsider. When a young boy is murdered, an experienced detective takes on the case… only to find himself questioning everything he thought he knew when a mysterious force starts wreaking havoc with the investigation. The 10-part miniseries is directed by Arrested Development’s Jason Bateman, who also stars.
Catch it… On HBO, January 12th, with back-to-back episodes at 9pm and 10pm
